ST. MARYS — Contracts for two new, part-time school police officers were approved Monday night by the St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors. Pending county court approval, Darren Burford and Thomas Izbinski will soon be on the beat.

According to copies of their contracts, the two will work no more than 25 hours a week and will receive an hourly wage of $15. Neither position includes benefits though both are eligible for raises.

The district currently employes two full-time police officers as well. Superintendent G. Brian Toth said the addition of more reflects the district’s commitment to student safety.

“In these days, it is much needed,” Toth said.

Burford and Izbinski’s appointments require approval in the Elk County Court of Common Pleas. Both can begin work one weekday after approval is granted.

Both will report to Officer John Lovett, whom Toth called the district’s seniormost officer. Their contracts will continue on a year-to-year basis.
