DuBOIS — Another busy day of USCAA Baseball Small College World Series action saw six games played Tuesday, with four played at Showers Field and two elimination games at Stern Family Field.
By the end of the action, Apprentice School and Penn State DuBois had moved to 2-0 to earn spots in today’s winner’s bracket final.
In other action, Mississippi University for Women and Bluefield State were both able to avoid elimination by winning a pair of games.
No. 5 Mississippi University for Women got the day started with a 9-4 victory to eliminate No. 8 Penn State Mont Alto.
No. 10 Bluefield State followed by avoiding elimination themselves for the first time on the day, sending No. 6 Southern Maine Community College home with a 10-1 win.
The third game of the day was the first of two winner’s bracket semifinals, as top-seeded Apprentice School secured a 5-4 walk-off win over No. 4 Wright State-Lake in eight innings.
Then, at Stern Family Field, Mississippi University for Women stayed alive with their second win of the day, knocking out No. 9 Selma with another 9-4 win.
Bluefield State followed with the second game of the day at the DuBois City Park, as it ended No. 2 seed Cincinnati-Clermont’s run at the tournament with a 4-0 victory.
In the final game of the day at Showers Field, No. 3 Penn State DuBois defeated No. 7 Bryant & Stratton 4-0 to move to 2-0.

No. 5 Mississippi
University for Women 9,
No. 8 PSU Mont Alto 4
Mississippi University for Women opened the day with a comeback win over Penn State Mont Alto to stave off elimination for the first time on the day.
The Owls trailed 4-2 after four innings of play before scoring four runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to secure the five-run win and eliminate Mont Alto.
Mississippi University took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, before Mont Alto scored two in the second and added two runs in the fourth after the Owls tied it in the third.
RJ Cox drew a bases loaded walk to bring home the first run in the fifth, as the Owls then took the lead when Will Peters reached on an error in right field that allowed three runs to score.
In the sixth, Heath Ford delivered an RBI single, Damain Benefield drove home a run with a double and Brandon Jones plated the final run of the game with a single.
Courtlan Frost picked up the win on the mound for the Owls, pitching the final two innings in relief and allowing no runs on three hits.
No. 10 Bluefield St. 10,
No 6 Southern Maine 1
In the second elimination game of the day, Bluefield State was able to stay alive by securing a dominant 10-1 win over Southern Maine Community College.
Bluefield State took a 2-0 lead after the first inning, before Southern Maine cut the deficit in half with a run in the second.
Bluefield State then added to its lead with one run in the fourth, three in the fifth and four more in the sixth inning.
Bayard Stevens pitched a complete game for Bluefield State, allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out five to record the win.
The Big Blues pounded out 14 hits in the win, as Peyton Durham led the way with three hits while Tanner Brandon, Cole Blocker, Kevon Moxey and Taylor Tibbs all added two hits apiece.
No. 1 Apprentice School 5,
No. 4 Wright State-Lake 4, 8 innings
Thomas Packert delivered a walk-off single to score Jake Day as the top-seeded Builders edged Wright State-Lake 5-4 to reach the winner’s bracket final.
After Wright State-Lake scored the game’s first run in the top of the first, Apprentice School responded with four runs in the bottom half to lead 4-1 after one inning.
The Lakers fought back, scoring two in the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the game and send it to extra innings.
That is when Packert delivered the game-winning hit to move the Builders to 2-0 in the Series.
Packert also earned the win on the mound for Apprentice School, pitching the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on three hits and no walks while striking out four.
Apprentice School will now take on Penn State DuBois in the winner’s bracket final today at 3 p.m., while Wright State-Lake will battle Bluefield State in an elimination game at 10 a.m.
No. 5 Mississippi
University for Women 9,
No. 9 Selma 4
The Owls were able to avoid elimination yet again, securing their second 9-4 win of the day, this time ending the tournament run of ninth seed Selma at Stern Family Field.
Mississippi University for Women scored four runs in the bottom of the first, as the eventual game-winning run came in the third inning.
The Owls then added four more runs in the fourth to push their lead to 9-0, as Selma’s four runs all came in the top of the seventh.
Leon Petite and Johndavid Birdsong led the way for Mississippi University for Women with two hits apiece in the win as they scored two and three runs respectively.
The Owls will look to fight off elimination for the third time in a row as they face No. 7 Bryant & Stratton today at 12:30 p.m.
No. 10 Bluefield State 4,
No. 2 UC-Clermont 0
Bluefield State became the second team of the day to avoid elimination twice Tuesday as it secured a 4-0 win over second seed Cincinnati-Clermont in the second and final game of the day at Stern Field.
The Big Blues scored three runs in the top of the second which proved to be more than enough, as they scored the final run of the game on a solo home run by Tanner Brandon in the fifth.
On the mound, Austin Stambaugh went the distance, allowing no runs on four hits and four walks and a trio of strikeouts to secure the win for Bluefield State.
Brandon delivered the eventual game-winning RBI with a single in the second to score Tanner Ray.
Brandon later scored on a single by Peyton Durham, who scored the third run of the game on an error.
Bluefield State will face elimination for the third time in a row today when it faces fourth seed Wright State Lake today at 10 a.m.
